Mechanical Design & Tooling

KT Engineering specializes in the development of custom tooling, ground support equipment, and test fixtures for both aerospace and non-aerospace commercial industry. We provide our customers with complete analysis and build-to-print engineering or, working with an established and versatile small business vendor base, turn-key hardware solutions. A few sample projects are highlighted below.

LAS Vertical Support Pallet

KT Engineering, under subcontract to Lockheed Martin, developed the designs for the Launch Abort System Vertical Support Pallet (LVSP) that will be used on the NASA Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) program. The LVSP is a portable fixture that will be used at the NASA Kennedy Space Center to perform assembly operations on the MPCV Launch Abort System prior to mating with the capsule. KT Engineering developed conceptual designs, detailed designs, Pro Engineer CAD models, fabrication blueprints, stress analysis, Functional Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and various program reports and documents.

MPCV Assembly Fixture

KT Engineering, under subcontract to General Products Partners, developed the designs for a complex assembly fixture for Lockheed Martin in support of the NASA Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) program. The Bird Cage Tool is used to locate and install a number of components and subsystems on the external surfaces of the MPCV pressurized module. The delivered tool included the primary structure, an adjustable 6DOF gimbal assembly for positioning the capsule in the tool, master gauges, locating fixtures, and work platforms. KT Engineering developed conceptual designs, detailed designs, Pro Engineer CAD models, fabrication blueprints, stress analysis, Functional Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and various program reports and documents. Morton Turn Table

KT Engineering supported Lockheed Martin and the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in the development of a multi-purpose friction-stir, plug weld fixture for the Ares I upper stage program. The innovative, modular design enabled it to be used with one or two individual gore segments as well as complete dome assemblies without major overhead crane operations to reconfigure the tool. The design also included a mobile, personnel platform that enabled access to the weld head and critical interfaces. KT Engineering was responsible for the creation of Pro Engineer CAD models, detailed fabrication blueprints, ANSYS stress analysis, fabrication, delivery, and assembly of the tool at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Automated Gantry System

KT Engineering served as prime contractor for the development of a twin tower, 12-axis, robotic welding gantry under a Small Business Innovation Research program with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the Air Force Research Laboratory. KT Engineering worked with world leading robot and resistance welding companies Gudel and Taylor Winfield to develop the 100 foot long twin tower system. KT Engineering was responsible for requirements definition, tool conceptual design, holding fixture detailed design, tool integration and buyoff.
